Reaching for the Sky

A couple of years after the incredible December storm of 2007, the remains of fir trees along the Pacifc Coast Highway still remain splintered from the hurricane force winds. Amongst these fallen giants, still standing tall in the blue August sky, are a hardy bunch of evergreens still reaching for the sky. This beautiful scene inspired my painting Reaching for the Sky. I wanted to paint evergreens against the dichotomy of fallen trees; depicting a natural contrast on canvas.

When we see clearly, everything around us seems more vibrant and alive. To really look with fresh eyes, eyes open and hearts open, we are able to have a new perspective that is refreshing and full of joy. To live with a constant heightened awareness would be like living in a technicolor world.

Inspired by the forests of the Pacific Northwest, this acrylic painting is the nightscape counterpart to another painting, "Reaching for the sky". Almost titled, "Finding Aurora", the transparent layers of the greens and blues in the night sky seem to dance in different light, giving resemblance to the aurora borealis.

The title "Somewhere to Believe In" took this thought further, knowing that a sighting of the Northern Lights is rare and breathtaking. Seeing such a sky, one might feel the glorious power of the Universe and give us "somewhere to believe in". A place in time to hold in our heart.
