Reaching for the Sky

A couple of years after the incredible December storm of 2007, the remains of fir trees along the Pacifc Coast Highway still remain splintered from the hurricane force winds. Amongst these fallen giants, still standing tall in the blue August sky, are a hardy bunch of evergreens still reaching for the sky. This beautiful scene inspired my painting Reaching for the Sky. I wanted to paint evergreens against the dichotomy of fallen trees; depicting a natural contrast on canvas.

This acrylic painting was inspired by an idyllic warm fall day. Standing on the shore of the Columbia River, I looked across the river at beautiful yellow and crimson trees reflecting in the water on the Oregon side. I thought about wanting to always remember this moment.

Fall is an interesting time of year. For many people it is their favorite season, loving the colorful display of changing leaves, and the crisp air. I enjoy the showy colors, but it usually carries with it a twinge of sadness because I know the days are getting shorter and darker. However, on this day, I was grateful for getting the opportunity to enjoy the sun and be in the moment. I embraced autumn for it's spectacular show, because without the cycles of seasons, I would not experience the rejuvenation of spring, the joy of summer, and the quiet of winter.

Somewhere to Believe In

When we see clearly, everything around us seems more vibrant and alive. To really look with fresh eyes, eyes open and hearts open, we are able to have a new perspective that is refreshing and full of joy. To live with a constant heightened awareness would be like living in a technicolor world.

Inspired by the forests of the Pacific Northwest, this acrylic painting is the nightscape counterpart to another painting, "Reaching for the sky". Almost titled, "Finding Aurora", the transparent layers of the greens and blues in the night sky seem to dance in different light, giving resemblance to the aurora borealis.

The title "Somewhere to Believe In" took this thought further, knowing that a sighting of the Northern Lights is rare and breathtaking. Seeing such a sky, one might feel the glorious power of the Universe and give us "somewhere to believe in". A place in time to hold in our heart.
